National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day is celebrated on August 2 of each year. Its creator is unknown, as the story goes, the original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in 1900 from a cart in New York's Bowery neighborhood. The ice cream between milk cookies became a success. Carts soon appeared all over the city and country during the summer months selling these portable delights.

One account claims that the modern chocolate waffle ice cream sandwich was invented in 1945 by Jerry Newberg. The ice cream man was selling his creation at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). At the time, the famous stadium was home to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. Once ice cream sandwiches became popular, recipes for home cooks filled the newspapers. The sandwich layers included everything from angel food and pound cake to shortbread. Restaurants offered the ice cream sandwich as a dessert for diners. Its preparation may be very simple, since it is a dessert that has two cookies, with ice cream in the middle, however, this combination of ice cream and cookies generates a unique flavor.
