CHURROMANIA® has been a success story since it’s beginnings in 1997 when Ariel Acosta-Rubio,Maria Alejandra Bravo and Miguel Bravo decided to open a Churro & Coffee store in a high traffic mall retaIl space that Ariel owned in Puerto La Cruz Venezuela. Initially many concepts were considered for this space including a beauty parlor, a travel agency and a hamburger restaurant but finally they jointly decided that a retail concept selling Churros was easier to manage and operate than any of the other ideas considered.

Easier said than done. The first weeks were plagued with problems related to the churro cooking process and achieving the correct flour mix which proved to be a challenge. Many of these problems eventually became best practices out of the intense learning process. Fortunately during these initial weeks of operation they were also blessed with long lines of customers attracted by the delicious Churro aroma waiting to buy their childhood favorite treat.

The little Churro joint quickly developed a cult-like following. Press paid attention. It took Ariel just a few weeks of operations to understand that they had a winning business concept with a great franchising potential.
During the next 9 months Ariel, Maria Alejandra and Miguel perfected their Churro Franchise, Operations and Marketing Business Model. They also opened a 2nd store just 9 months after the first opening. At this point in time CHURROMANIA® was The Place to get a fresh, crispy sugar sprinkled Churro bag or with all the toppings you could place on top of a Churro tray.

Late in 1998 CHURROMANIA® began offering franchise opportunities. In just under 15 months, the company sold franchise options for over 15 units nationwide in Venezuela. The overwhelming success of franchising a CHURROMANIA® Store made national news in articles and trade publications.

Early in 2001 the founders decided to open a store at the Dolphin Mall in Miami Florida as a pilot to test Churros in the US Hispanic market and it was a huge success. There are now 15 stores open in South Florida most of them in major malls and Walmart Stores.

Now, over 15 years after the first store opened, there are over 100 locations in the US, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico and Peru and over 25 units in development for 2013. CHURROMANIA® continues to receive media attention and has grown a cult-like following in all the countries it operates in. The company plans to open 200 new US stores in the next five years targeting the Hispanic market.

To satisfy the urge for the sweet taste that latinos crave several times a day (After meals, in breaks and the “merienda”) and that is part of our cultural and culinary heritage.

Thanks to CHURROMANIA® you can now eat and share Churros with friends and family. Churros are a favorite childhood delicacy for many and an important part of the Latino heritage Hispano-Americans have been missing for years in the United States.

History is divided on how exactly churros came to exist. Some say they were the invention of nomadic Spanish shepherds. Living high in the mountains with no access to bakeries, the Spanish shepherds supposedly created churros, whichwere easy for them to cook in frying pans over fire. Lending credibility tothis version of history is the fact that there exists a breed of sheep called the "Navajo-Churro", which are descended from the "Churra" sheep of the Iberian Peninsula; the horns of these sheep look similar to the fried pastry.

Another story says that Portuguese sailors discovered a similar food in Northern China called "You Tiao" and they brought it back with them. The Spanish learned of the new culinary treat from their neighbors, and put their own spin on it by passing the dough through a star-shaped tip which gives the churro its signature ridges.

Whether Spanish shepherds, Portuguese sailors or the Chinese get the credit for inventing the churro, it was the conquistadors who introduced them to LatinAmerica. Since then, the modern day churro has undergone various reincarnations including guava-filled churros in Cuba, dulce de leche-filled churros in Mexico and a cheese-filled version in Uruguay.

Straight or spiral-shaped, with or without a dusting of cinnamon and sugar, dipped in chocolate or straight out of a paper bag on the street, churros, in all their creative variations, willcontinue to delight people from Hispanic origins everywhere.

Viva la Musica (VLM) is an organization created by CHURROMANIA® as a way of giving back to the community that allowed them to become the success they are today. VLM provides children in community centers with musical instruments that they otherwise would not be able to afford. The idea is to encourage group-based learning, to increase the appreciation of music and most importantly to provide these children with an alternative lifestyle. Nevertheless, our reach goes beyond the children and towards making a big difference in the lives of their families. VLM encourages these families, which are generally very divided and distant, to join the local festivities as well as their children’s activities in an effort to bring them together and increase their confidence and self-esteem.

ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITY: “Three Perspectives on Ethics and Social Responsibility in the company of the XXI  Century”

Ariel Acosta-Rubio, Churromania’s President and Founder, directed and sponsored the publishing of “Three  Perspectives on Ethics and Social Responsibility in the company of the XXI Century” by Emeterio Gómez, Víctor  Guedez and Italo Pizzolante. This book illustrates  three different perspectives on the role of corporations in today’s  business world. As explained by Eli Bravo, it is not intended to act as a  manual or a recipe, but it is actually  something much better: a starting point to answer some  of the deepest and most vital questions that  a business  man faces.  Defining morality, understanding where your values start  and end, differentiating between social  responsibility  and  being socially responsible, are grey areas that this book attempts to  grasp and understand.
